ACADEMIC SUBJECTS
IWK
307: ADVANCED PAPER TECHNOLOGY -
INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS FOR PULP AND PAPER
Interest in and fondness for the wide
variety of analytical techniques were the reasons behind my willingness to lead
the Advanced Paper Technology course on Instrumental Analysis for Pulp and Paper (IWK 307). This
is the first subject that I teach throughout my career as USM
academic.
Below is the visual of my students
and I, taken on the 25th of April this year. These are the first batch of
students for the new IWK 307 curriculum.

IWK 307 students during a
visit to Electron Microscopy unit, USM, 25/4/2007, two days before IWK 307 final
semester exam.
77% of these students scored A and A- for this course and two of them
were in the
Dean's List for Semester 2, 2006/2007 academic
year.
IWK 307 is an elective course for
third year Bioresource, Paper and Coatings (BPC) students. In this course,
students are introduced to instrumental methods of analysis. The concept of analysis pertinent to pulp and paper was
extracted from journal articles, private communication with
experts in the field and the outcome documented in my doctoral
research. These pieces of knowledge are put together to formulate
exam questions, quizzes, assignments and in-class activities.
At the end of the course, students
are expected to put the concepts together and apply in problem-solving
situation. To achieve this objective, students are familiarised with
problem-solving type of exercises, done in tutorial sessions after every topic of instrumental analysis covered in lectures.

IUA 313: Research project for Final Year students
Beginning 2007/2008 academic year, final
year students under my supervision will be selecting projects from a list of
research topics. Students will also be coached on research methodology in order
to train them on information search, organizing of research materials,
retrieving information, storing of data and all the basic crucial steps in
carrying out research that students cannot learn elsewhere.

IWA 383: PAPER TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY II
The load of teaching for this
course is shared between a colleague and I. The experiments that I
will be supervising are the ones involving instrumental method of
analysis and the classical method for determination of the different
forms of celluloses. Reports for my sections are required to be
presented orally.

FOR SEM 2
07/08 ACADEMIC YEAR STUDENTS

WUS 101 - TERAS
KEUSAHAWANAN
"Teras Keusahawanan" is a course
offered in all universities (IPTA) in Malaysia. It is presently offered
to first year students for one semester and in the future students may
choose to take the course at any time during their candidature. WUS 101
is a course aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills
and for enhancing students capacity for running business. It is enforced
as a compulsory course for all IPTA students so as to help them broaden
their career prospects by the time they graduate.
In School of Industrial Technology,
the 4 academics appointed as facilitators for
this course are:
-
Associate Professor Dr Noor Aziah
Abd Aziz
(Head of Facilitators))
-
Dr Ruzita Ahmad (Division of Food
Technology)
-
Dr Arniza Ghazali (Division of
Bioresource, Paper and Coatings Technology)
-
Ms Fera Fizani Ahmad Fizri (Division of
Environmental Technology)

RESEARCH AND SUPERVISION
Candidates interested in pursuing
graduate studies (research mode) are encouraged to
contact me directly to match the areas
of interest and to discuss application details. Successful
applicants will be
given the freedom to appoint one or more co-supervisors from a
suggested list of experts in the relevant fields.
The research areas of my interest
are:
-
Alkaline Peroxide Brightening
Mechanism
-
Development of APMP-breed
systems for the pulping of non-wood materials.
-
Environmental impacts of
APMP systems versus other pulping systems.
